Western Springs Practice #1

It's been the best part of a year since Percy set foot on a speedway track and what a welcome sight it was to be back. The weather conditions weren't ideal but the rain held off long enough for the sound of the first car to fire up at Western Springs Speedway for the 2008/09 season.

The season started with an hour long delay due to poor track conditions. The entrance to Pine Tree Bend needed substantial work while a Baseball mound like area of clay sat unattended along the middle of the front straight. With nobody on the pit gate plenty of bystanders got the chance to have a walk on the track and infield. What an awe inspiring arena that place must be when you stand on the infield and look out to a packed terrace.

8 Sprintcars were in attendance. The 7usa Craig Dollansky car looks absolutely amazing. Numbers were down on what I had anticipated but rumour suggests a couple of drivers were making the trip to Palmy (which got rained out). Midgets were scattered a bit throughout the pits and never managed to get on track all at once but I would say there were about 12. All the usual suspects were in attendance while the likes of Alvin Cobb and Michael Brunt were racing at Huntly. TQ's probably got around 15 cars and the Quarter Midgets numbered approximately six.

Green flag laps were allowed but it was single file down the front straight due to the aforementioned Baseball mound. The entrance to Pine Tree Bend was also rather lumpy. Given it was a practice nobody was going to push 100% in those conditions. The highlight for me was Midget 33a Graham Standring who looked aggressive and fast.

Overall it was nice to be back and I'm looking forward to making the trip down to Huntly Speedway this Saturday night.
